It's designed to try and force you to run into common misconceptions and confusions students have, which then will make working through homework and the midterm/final that much easier. It's actually sort of funny -- we get no questions for like 10-20 minutes, then everybody runs into the same ... WebI would honestly still say take 142 just so you have a sort of failsafe in case you get a bad grade. Taking 142 will allow you to understand exactly what UW CSE wants. I believe the AP doesn't really have "style points", which UW really really cares about in homework (but I haven't researched AP's so correct me if I'm wrong).
